I guess even Lazarus had to die

eventually

See his death coming like ivy climbing over a grey building

moistening and weakening the support.

The physical support

of his earthen vessel.

He had to say goodbyes this time

cut the umbilical chord 

to those he loved.

Those who mourned him before.

What extra time he had!

What joy and faith that spread.

The call came this week.

Your cancer marker that had marked time for us 

has leapt into danger

and into the shadow of death.

And the debt we owe for twelve beautiful years of reprieve?

Faith and dignity in this final furlong
